KINGSPORT — For 16 minutes Saturday night, it appeared the Sullivan South boys basketball team had an upset in the works.
That changed when Gate City (11-7) ramped up its defensive pressure and the elusive Paul Arnold unleashed his creative maneuvers.
Arnold, following up his 31-point performance against Lee High, fired in 27 and the Blue Devils defeated South 59-45.
“We don’t think any game is a given,’’ the 6-foot-2 Arnold said. “We knew South had played Dobyns-Bennett tough last night and that its transition game had improved.’’
Gate City exploded for 41 points, with Arnold scoring 18 of these, in the second half to win going away.
