GATE CITY — Lee High coach Steve Collier readily admitted that his team got outplayed by Gate City in a key Clinch Mountain District contest on Friday night.
But after a heated argument with Gate City coach Scottie Vermillion led to his ejection with 1:35 remaining in the Blue Devils’ 79-53 victory, Collier didn’t believe his team got outclassed.
“We got our butt kicked, and I’ve got nothing wrong with that,” Collier said. “But (Vermillion)’s got a 25-point lead and two minutes to go and he’s pressing us.
“I know he was trying to make a statement or whatever, and I was wanting to make a statement. I think there comes a point where, as a person — not as a coach, but as a person — you’ve got to have a little class.”
Thanks to a stifling full-court press, the Blue Devils were up 75-50 when Collier walked toward Gate City’s bench and began yelling at Vermillion. Both coaches received technical fouls after the exchange, but Collier picked up another one and was escorted out of the gym.
