JOHNSON CITY — With a sellout crowd stacked to the rafters, Science Hill and Dobyns-Bennett added another thrilling chapter to their torrid basketball rivalry on Friday night.
The Indians erased an 11-point halftime deficit and took the lead with 46 seconds left in the contest, but the Hilltoppers, led by sophomore guard Will Adams, came up with enough plays down the stretch to escape with a 79-75 Big 8 Conference victory.
Adams scored 12 of his game-high 20 points in the fourth quarter, including a pair of foul shots with 38 seconds left that gave Science Hill the lead for good. On the heels of a steal and breakaway layup by Devaun Swafford that put D-B ahead by a point, Adams calmly dribbled his way through the Tribe’s defense and drew a foul at the rim.
“(Will) is a special kid because he doesn’t go out and force his shot,” Science Hill coach Ken Cutlip said. “He’s content to score four or six a night and share the ball. But if we need him to shoot it, he delivers under pressure.”
