BIG STONE GAP — After winning one of the greatest high school football games ever played in Southwest Virginia, Powell Valley coach Phil Robbins proclaimed Appalachia’s Travis Turner a “big-time quarterback” with zero irony intended.
Monday night, Turner was named Robbins’ successor as coach of the Vikings football program.
“It’s an old rivalry, but that was years ago. You kind of grow past things like that,” said Turner, who served as an assistant coach under Robbins for the past three seasons.
“It’s an honor to coach at Powell Valley.”
Turner brings a broad resumé to his first head coaching assignment. He has literally spent his entire life absorbing gridiron expertise.
