Tribe suffocates East to stay alive in Arby's

December 30th, 2010 12:25 am by Pat Kenney

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Basketball at 9 o’clock in the morning is not always pretty to watch. But beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Playing in the Arby’s Classic consolation bracket on Wednesday, Dobyns-Bennett used a smothering defensive effort in the first half to upend Sullivan East 56-39 at Viking Hall.

With the victory, the Indians advanced to play Sumter, S.C., at 9 a.m. today. The Gamecocks blasted Gate City 81-45 on Wednesday. The Patriots were eliminated from tournament play.

While both D-B and East seemed to be sleepwalking a bit on offense, it was the Indians’ defense that set off the alarm bell. The Patriots (6-6) had the ball for the first two minutes of the game before D-B’s relentless pressure finally forcing a turnover.

“I stress with the guys to lock down on their opponent when they have the ball,’’ said D-B coach Charlie Morgan. “We have to have stops with our defense.’’
