In 2007, Gate City lost 52-0 to Gretna in a VHSL state championship football game in Salem.
The probing of that particular sore spot seems compulsory now that the Blue Devils (11-2) and the Hawks (12-1) are set for a rematch in Saturday’s Group A, Division 2 title game at Salem’s Memorial Stadium.
It’s a ready- made revenge motive. But given the weight of the two programs’ respective gridirion traditions, is it really worth more than a footnote?
“Yeah, I know about it. They came out with a sign that said ‘Gretna Who?’ But these are different teams,” said Hawks coach Kevin Saunders.
“If that’s what they want to do to get excited, then do it. But our kids have their own mindset. They know that Gate City has a great football team and a great football program.”
