CLINCHPORT — With reminders of Rye Cove’s deep volleyball tradition hanging on banners overhead, the Lady War Eagles displayed the type of poise Tuesday night that can only come from experience.
Rye Cove recovered from a slow start, shook off uncharacteristic mistakes and won enough clutch points to pull off a 25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-23 victory over a Galax squad making its first state quarterfinal appearance.
“In many ways, we were a little bit off tonight,” Rye Cove coach Greg Gilliam said. “We missed a lot of serves and our passing wasn’t as good as it has been, but we did what we’ve done all year long — we played scrappy and we fought and fought and fought for points.
“In the end, we made a few more plays than they did.”
