A Kingsport woman has been arrested after allegedly opening a credit card account in the name of a man she met online then using it to make nearly $6,000 worth of purchases.
Edwina Johnson, 46, of 342 Citation Circle, was arrested at her home on Friday morning. According to Kingsport police reports, the victim is a 53-year-old man from Arden, N.C.
He told police he met Johnson online and they began seeing each other in March or April. Afterwards he was allegedly contacted by Sears, informing him a credit card account had been opened in his name in May, with Johnson as an authorized user.
As police investigated the alleged fraud they learned the card had been used four separate occasions at Sears, totaling $400.98, and 17 times at Kmart, totaling $5,244.45.
The police reports say Johnson was interviewed and admitted opening the credit card account, but claimed she had the man's permission to do so. She was arrested and charged with theft of more than $1,000, booked into the city jail and released after posting bond.comments powered by Disqus
