Man charged with DUI after Kingsport hit and run

November 3rd, 2010 11:30 am by Rain Smith

A Kingsport man — whom police say they have dealt with "numerous times" — has been arrested after allegedly leaving the scene of a collision, running a stop sign and driving twice into a ditch.

According to a Kingsport police arrest report, Tony A. Lane, 51, of 1920 Greenway Drive, was driving on a license revoked for a previous DUI conviction. When he was pulled over Tuesday at 1:25 p.m., he allegedly admitted to drinking earlier in the day, and had a nearly empty 32 ounce can of beer in his car.

An officer reports being parked on Union Street running radar when a 1988 Cadillac Eldorado passed, traveling 51 mph in the 30 mph zone. When the officer pulled out to initiate a stop, the car allegedly accelerated and continued going north on Union Street.

The officer reports the Cadillac, driven by Lane, ran off the right shoulder of the road and into a ditch on two occasions, "almost wrecking." Lane allegedly ran a stop sign on Clouds Ford Road and continued a short distance to Granby Road before stopping.

As police spoke with Lane central dispatch advised his car had been involved in a hit and run on Greenway Street, backing into another vehicle. Lane allegedly admitted to coming from that area, and that he'd had four beers earlier in the day. Police say two 32 ounce beer cans were inside the car, with one nearly empty.

Lane was arrested and charged with speeding, DUI, a fourth offense of driving on a revoked license, leaving the scene of an accident, improper backing and failure to provide financial responsibility.
