A Kingsport woman was arrested Tuesday after allegedly hitting a pole in the parking lot of Walmart, then claiming she had been forced into the collision by another vehicle traveling the wrong way.
Police say they reviewed surveillance video from the store, finding no other car was involved.
Carolyn M. Thorpe, 58, of 838 Lamont St., was charged with filing a false report and transported to the city jail. According to a Kingsport police arrest report, she called central dispatch to report a wreck at 10:36 a.m.
When an officer arrived at the store, 3200 Fort Henry Drive, Thorpe allegedly relayed that a white Honda with a wing on the rear had come at her head-on. She claimed she was forced to make a quick maneuver in her 2000 Nissan Maxima, resulting in it hitting the pole.
The officer notes that he observed no physical evidence of evasive action at the scene, and that Thorpe would have been facing the sun when the incident occurred. A review of Walmart surveillance footage revealed no other car was involved.
When questioned again about the incident, according to the report, Thorpe allegedly said that maybe another car was not involved, resulting in her arrest.
