KINGSPORT — Some 12,000 football fans filed into J. Fred Johnson Stadium to watch Dobyns-Bennett play Sullivan South a few years ago.
Some rivalry? Not really, according to one of the coaches.
“I believe the true definition of a rivalry is that one of the teams must beat the other once in three years,’’ South coach Sam Haynie said. “We haven’t beaten D-B in 17 years. I don’t think you’d call that a rivalry.’’
Haynie, a dominating lineman, was a TSSAA Class AAA “Mr. Football’’ selection when South last defeated D-B, 33-7 in 1992.
