August 6th, 2010 3:17 pm by Rain Smith

A father and son allegedly witnessed an attempted lawn mower theft in Rogersville on Tuesday, then successfully detained the suspects until police arrived.

The incident occurred at 708 Sandy Valley Road. According to a Hawkins County Sheriff's Office arrest report, at 6:43 p.m. deputies were called to the home for an alleged burglary in progress.

Police say Gary Jones Jr., 33, and his father, Gary Jones Sr., age unavailable, had seen a Ford Explorer go up the driveway. The men reported knowing it was not supposed to be at the residence, which is Jones Sr.'s daughter's.

The two entered the property to check things out, allegedly witnessing a man and woman remove a lawn mower from a building. When they began pushing the mower towards the back of the Explorer, police say father an son "confronted" and "detained" the suspects until officers arrived.

The report did not specify if the alleged would-be thieves struggled or cooperated.

The suspects are identified as William Ashley Davis, of 217 Stanley Valley Road, lot No. 14, Rogersville, and Tina Michelle Flanigan, of 163 Bert Price Road, Rogersville. Their ages were redacted from their arrest reports provided to the media.

They were each charged with burglary, theft under $500 and transported to the Hawkins County jail.
