PRINCETON — Starting pitcher Brett Mitchell struggled from the start, and the Kingsport Mets fell 11-2 to Princeton in the clubs’ Appalachian League series finale on Wednesday night.

The Rays (18-18) took two consecutive from the K-Mets, now 17-19, following a series- opening defeat.

Mitchell (2-2) lasted just 3 1-3 innings, giving up seven runs, all earned, on six hits to see his ERA reach 6.00. He issued three walks and fanned four.

Princeton did much of its work in the third and fourth innings against Mitchell and reliever Steve Winnick. The two frames accounted for nine of the Rays’ 11 runs.

Ruben Contreras anchored the Rays offensively, his 3-for-5 day highlighted by a two-run double in the third. Flex Gonzalez closed 3-for-4 with an RBI and a double.

The K-Mets managed 10 hits. Chase Greene, Justin Schafer and Charles Hinojosa collected two apiece. Hinojosa served up a solo home run in the ninth inning.

Jacob Partridge (4-2) recorded the win for Princeton, surrendering just four hits over four innings of shutout work. He walked two.

Kingsport’s six-game road trip continues this evening when the K-Mets open a three-game set at Pulaski. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.
