Kingsport woman charged with prescription fraud

July 15th, 2010 12:58 pm by Rain Smith

On Wednesday Kingsport police were at a pharmacy on another call when a woman allegedly tried to fill a fraudulent prescription at the location, prompting her arrest.

An arrest report says an officer was investigating an unrelated fraud case at Brookside Pharmacy, 1901 Brookside Drive, at about 9:50 a.m. While on scene, a woman presented a prescription for 21 Percocet in the drive-thru.

Suspicious employees contacted Indian Path Hospital, learning the prescription was written for 1 Percocet, not 21. The officer then went outside to speak with the suspect, with her allegedly admitting to changing the prescription's quantity.

Carla J. Atkins, 46, of 420 Astor St. Kingsport, was arrested and charged prescription fraud. Police say she was going to pay for the medicine through TennCare.

Officers also questioned an individual who had driven Atkins to the pharmacy. They quickly learned she didn't even know Atkins, and was giving her a ride from the hospital.
