Hammer-wielding robber stymied by Knoxville motel clerk with golf club

KNOXVILLE — Knoxville police are searching for a hammer-wielding man who attempted to rob a motel in North Knoxville early today but was rebuffed by a clerk brandishing a golf club.

Police responded to the Best Value Inn Motel, 300 Merchants Drive, about 3:12 a.m. after receiving an attempted robbery call.

A clerk told officers the man approached the front counter, produced a hammer and demanded money, according to Knoxville Police Department Lt. Kenny Miller.
