Nashville police mistakenly let man into jail with loaded gun

June 9th, 2010 4:03 am by Clay Carey

Police are investigating an officer's mistake that allowed a man under arrest to carry a loaded gun into the Davidson County Jail last week.

By the time authorities found the 9mm handgun in the waistband of Jesse Alexander's pants, he already had been put into a police patrol car, driven to the jail and escorted into a secure part of the building. "We do not even let police officers in our jail with a loaded gun," Davidson County Sheriff Daron Hall said.

Metro police officer Travis Baxter arrested Alexander outside of a nightclub on Second Avenue on June 1 after arriving there to check on a robbery complaint. Police spokesman Don Aaron said Alexander, 23, was drunk and belligerent.
