Knoxville vet killed while helping injured dog; police seek hit-and-run driver

April 17th, 2010 12:00 am by Kristen Letsinger

Amy Leming still can't believe the woman who saved the life of one of her dogs is dead.

On Thursday night, Leming's two dogs, Rosalyn and Chewy, got out of her North Knoxville home. Rosalyn, a lab mix, ran into the road and was struck by a vehicle near Crestwood Road. Kathyrn Denise Geiger Gilpatrick, a 37-year-old veterinarian at the Cat Clinic on Perimeter Park Road, came out of her home, 3709 Garden Drive, to try to save Rosalyn.

While helping the dog, she was struck by an Isuzu Amigo sport utility vehicle at about 8:36 p.m., said Knoxville Police Department spokesman Darrell DeBusk. Gilpatrick died Friday morning at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.
