Tenn. to require students to receive more vaccinations

March 15th, 2010 12:00 am by Lola Alapo

Starting in the 2010-11 school year, the Tennessee Department of Health will have new vaccination requirements for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students and seventh-graders statewide.

East Tennessee school systems are working to get the word out to parents and are hopeful they'll avoid the rush at the beginning of the school year and instead, take advantage of spring and summer breaks to get their children the shots.

Also different this year is a new official immunization certificate parents will need to give to a school or child care provider. The forms will be available to physicians beginning in April. Tennessee has not changed its immunization requirements in 10 years, according to a Department of Health letter addressed to parents.
