East Tennessee man arrested for fatal shooting one day after getting probation in gun case

March 4th, 2010 12:00 am by Associated Press

CHATTANOOGA - One day before a fatal shooting outside a Chattanooga convenience store, the man charged with murder had been placed on probation for unlawfully carrying a firearm.

Police told the Chattanooga Times Free Press that 29-year-old Jamaal Byrd fatally shot Terrance Etchison Saturday night outside a convenience store after they argued inside.

Hamilton County General Sessions Court Judge Christie Mahn Sell handed down the suspended sentence and probation sentence Friday on the misdemeanor firearm charge against Byrd.

Byrd's attorney, Brian O'Shaughnessy, said the probation is standard for someone with no violent criminal history.

A court hearing is set March 24.

Records show Byrd was previously charged with domestic violence but authorities dropped those charges.
