Fire destroys Hawkins County home

A Wednesday morning structure fire off Carters Valley Road in Hawkins County has destroyed a home.

According to Jessie Bishop, deputy chief of the Goshen Valley Volunteer Fire Department, a call reporting the fire was received shortly before 10 a.m. Firefighters from three departments responded to the scene, 228 Santa Fe Road, to find the home fully involved.

Both the home and a car parked on the property were totally destroyed. The occupant of the residence was not present when the fire ignited, and there were no injuries.

Bishop said it took less than an hour for to get the fire extinguished, but responders had to fight obstacles besides the flames: The nearest hydrant is located about a half mile from the residence, and Thursday's cold temperatures froze two hoses.

"Cold weather always presents a problem when you're dealing with water," Bishop said. "Sometimes these hose lines and nozzles and working parts will freeze up. We did have some issues with the first couple lines freezing up, but we switched them out and got things working."

Along with Goshen Valley, volunteer fire departments from Mount Carmel and Carters Valley responded the scene.
