Husband sought in Pigeon Forge honeymoon slaying captured on I-75

RICEVILLE, Tenn. - A man wanted in the stabbing death of his wife while they were honeymooning in Pigeon Forge was arrested this afternoon while driving southbound on Interstate 75.


Brian L. Umphrey, 34, was taken into custody without incident about midafternoon by an Athens police officer, according to Athens Police Chief Chuck Ziegler.


Authorities in McMinn County had been on the lookout for Umphrey, who is from Athens, as a suspect in the slaying of his wife, Cassandra M. Petry, 36. Her body was found about 11:30 p.m. Monday at the Days Inn on the Parkway, according to Pigeon Forge Police Chief Jack Baldwin. Umphrey was driving Petry's 1999 white Dodge Durango SUV when an Athens police officer saw him and began following on the interstate, according to Ziegler.
