A Kingsport man was arrested Wednesday after allegedly stealing $207 worth of electronics from Kmart, then taking a swipe with a knife at employees attempting to stop him.

According to an arrest report from the Kingsport Police Department, the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. at the East Stone Drive Kmart.

Loss prevention personnel told police a man, later identified as Michael Hall, 37, of 1000 Stonegate Road, Apt. G14, had entered the electronics department.

Hall allegedly removed five MP3 players, a digital camera and camera case from a pegboard. Employees said they witnessed Hall use a pocketknife to remove the items from their packaging then hide the electronics in the pockets of his pants.

The police report states Hall attempted to leave the store without paying for the items. Three employees tried to stop him, but Hall allegedly brandished a small pocketknife and threatened, “Get off me or I’ll cut you!”

Police say a struggle ensued, with Hall allegedly attempting to cut one of the loss prevention officers. When police arrived at the scene, he had been detained.

Hall was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery.
