According to the Morristown Citizen Tribune a woman died and a man who was attempting to save her life suffered smoke inhalation at an apartment fire.
Terry Rathbone, who lives at the apartment complex, identified the victim as his mother, Betty Rathbone. The man says his mother was in her 70s.
Fire officials had not yet identified the injured man or the cause of the blaze Tuesday afternoon.
Rathbone says the man entered the burning apartment after thick smoke and intense heat forced him to retreat. “I tried to stop him,” said Rathbone, whose hair, beard and eyebrows were heavily singed in his rescue attempt. “I heard him holler once … When I looked into the door, her chair was on fire. I couldn’t see her.”
