KNOXVILLE — A Knoxville Police Department officer shot a man tonight who allegedly tried to run him down with a Jeep Cherokee in South Knoxville, authorities say.
The officer wasn’t harmed, but the suspect is undergoing surgery at the University of Tennessee Medical Center, said KPD spokesman Darrell DeBusk. Police haven’t released the name of either the officer or the suspect.
The incident happened about 7:45 p.m. on Avenue A when a KPD officer tried to pull over the Jeep for having a broken headlight, DeBusk said. The officer had been assigned to work a traffic calming detail in the neighborhood due to complaints about speeding drivers, he said.
