Pedestrian who had been drinking dies after being hit by car

November 9th, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

According to a report in the Greeneville Sun, a Newport Highway resident died at the Johnson City Medical Center overnight apparently from injuries suffered when he was struck by a car on the East Andrew Johnson Highway about 8:20 p.m. Friday.

Greeneville Police officer David Shell's report on the incident says Somphou Phommachanh, 51, was hit by a car driven by Billy Daniel Miller, 72, of Harman Chapel Rd,  as he attempted to cross the East Andrew Johnson Highway at its intersection with Burns Street. The report says Miller had been driving east in the outside traffic lane when Phommachanh, who "had been drinking," walked into the path of Miller's car.
