An 81-year-old mother is clinging to life at Middle Tennessee Medical Center after being severely beaten with a baseball bat by her adult son at their home early Wednesday, according to Murfreesboro Police.

Loraine VanBlarcom of Independence Way was admitted to the hospital shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday in serious condition, according to Murfreesboro Police spokesman Kyle Evans.

Police say Roger VanBlarcom, 45, from the same Independence Way home, is being held in the Rutherford County Adult Detention Center on a charge of attempted first-degree murder.
