A Tennessee Highway Patrol trooper on the Capitol security detail is under investigation over allegations that he forwarded a racist e-mail on the state's computer system, a department spokesman confirmed Wednesday.
Trooper Brent Gobbell, 51, who is white, was placed on administrative leave with pay last Friday. It's the second incident this year in which a state employee at the Capitol is accused of sending a racially offensive e-mail.
A legislative aide to Sen. Diane Black brought national attention to Tennessee in June after forwarding a racially derogatory e-mail about President Barack Obama. The aide was reprimanded and later apologized.
The patrol released the trooper's e-mail Wednesday, and it appears to be a chain e-mail. Gobbell is accused of receiving it on his state account and forwarding it to other state employees.
