Kingsport brawl leaves one bitten on nose, aggressor dragged by truck

KINGSPORT  — A Kingsport man was arrested on aggravated assault charges Saturday night after being dragged through a parking lot by a truck as his alleged victims attempted to escape.

Three people sustained injuries in the incident ranging from pulled-out hair to flesh being bitten from the tip of a nose.

According to an incident report from the Kingsport Police Department, an officer responded to Maple Oaks Apartments, 818 Oak St., about 7:45 p.m. Central Dispatch advised a man was being dragged through the parking lot by a maroon Ford truck.

At the scene police located David Wayne Amyx, 28, 331 Sewanee Ave., Kingsport. Amyx told police that his cousin, who was driving a truck, had dragged him down the road. However, police said Amyx could not remember details of the incident such as the order of events or why his cousin had accelerated away while he was hanging onto the vehicle.

Amyx said he was injured, and EMS transported him to the Holston Valley Medical Center Emergency Room for treatment.

Meanwhile, the truck in question arrived at the police station. The officer who spoke with Amyx responded to speak with the subjects, who provided police with more information  —  and a vastly different story  —  than Amyx.

The driver of the truck, William Marcell Dockery, 190 Whitaker Road, Jonesborough, said he was bringing Amyx and a woman home from Jonesborough. Dockery said Amyx asked the woman, Brittany Marie Ramey, 2813 McCoy St., Kingsport, to come inside the residence with him.

According to Dockery’s statements to police, Ramey, who was seated on a fender in the rear of the truck, refused his offer. This reportedly “enraged” Amyx, who allegedly began choking Ramey from behind. Dockery said Amyx was trying to drag Ramey from the rear of the truck.

At this point, according to statements to police, Amyx pulled Ramey’s sweatshirt off, and she was able to slip out of his choke hold. Another passenger in the truck, James Manuel Dockery, also of Jonesborough, got out of the vehicle and tried to pull Amyx away. At this point Amyx allegedly turned on James Dockery and bit him on the face, tearing a piece of flesh from the tip of his nose.

The group also told police that Amyx tried to pull the handle off a floor jack in the back of the truck and use it as a weapon. However, he could not get it loosened.

James Dockery said he head-butted Amyx and jumped back into the truck. William Dockery told police that Amyx pulled something shiny from his pants, and he believed it was a knife. At the urging of others in the truck, William Dockery then drove away.

The driver told police he did not know where Amyx was, as he was focusing on driving the truck. He said that as he drove away he could hear Amyx yelling that he was going to shoot everyone in the truck.

Police report no weapons were located at the scene or on Amyx.

Amyx was taken into custody at the hospital and charged with two counts of aggravated assault. The report says he was placed into a special cell for violent and aggressive offenders.

Ramey was treated at the hospital for a bruised right eye, swelling around her throat, and hair being pulled from her head. James Dockery was treated for the bite wound to his nose.
