Penske's withdrawal from Saturn deal disappoints dealers, owners

It appears the stars just weren’t going to align for the Saturn vehicle line.

The brand may not have made money for General Motors, but it looked until Wednesday as if entrepreneur Roger Penske’s Penske Automotive Group was going to keep Saturn alive.

Wednesday’s news — that Penske’s deal with a manufacturer to produce vehicles for Saturn’s 350-odd dealers was off — deflated those hopes, said Chris Lee of Bill Gatton Automotive Group, which owns five Saturn dealerships, including the North Roan Street location that is the Tri-Cities’ only one. The news also came as a shock, despite the problems that have plagued the auto industry, because Penske was about to unveil a manufacturer for the deal first announced in June.
