Morristown woman, unborn baby survive shooting

September 21st, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

The Morristown Citizen Triubne is reporting that Mary Ellen Smith, 26, and her 7-month-old fetus survived a shooting Friday night and barring complications are expected to make a full recovery.

The shooting occurred when Steven A. Pugh Jr., 40, allegedly attempted to kill his pregnant ex-girlfriend and their viable 7-month-old fetus. Driving a motorcylce, Pugh rolled up to Heritage Center Nursing Care on McFarland Street as Smith, a practical nurse, was leaving work.

At close range, Pugh allegedly fired shots into Smith’s abdomen.

Smith's mother told reporters that the woman underwent surgery Saturday afternoon at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville to repair a shattered rib, mend a tear in her colon and to remove shrapnel from her gall bladder and pancreas.

Pugh was arrested at a Cocke County bar later Friday night and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder.
