ROGERSVILLE — A Church Hill man has been arrested for allegedly using a doggy door to enter a home and steal more than $8,000 worth of jewelry.

The man had been hired in the past to do work around the victim’s residence.

According to an offense report from the Hawkins County Sheriff’s Office, police responded to a Canton Road residence Monday. The victim said she arrived home to find the doggy door cocked sideways. When she entered the home she found a jewelry box in her bedroom was open.

According to the police report, about $8,250 worth of jewelry was stolen including six diamond rings and a strand of pearls.

The victim told police she suspected a man she had hired in the past to do jobs around her house.

According to the victim, on one occasion she locked her keys in the home, and the man had crawled through the doggy door to let her back inside.

The deputy then went to speak with the man, Wayne Joy Begley, 30, 929 Old Union Road, Lot 8.

The police report says Begley admitted to the burglary and to gaining entrance through the doggy door.

Begley was arrested and charged with theft of more than $1,000.
