August 27th, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

The Tennessean is reporting state auto dealers asked for almost $51 million in reimbursement under the Cash for Clunkers program.

The program provided up to $4,500 cash for trading in a lower gas mileage vehicle on a new one that gets higher gas mileage.

Federal officials said 700,000 older vehicles are being taken off the roads through the program. Under federal rules, those vehicles must be destroyed.
