According to the Bristol Herald Courier a $250,000 Wilderness Road home was gutted by an early-morning fire Thursday.
Bobby Johnson, was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation at his home and was quickly released. He then returned to watch firefighters battle the blaze.
Assistant Fire Chief Gary Russell said firefighters entered the main level of the house and felt the fire raging beneath them. They cut into the basement through the garage, using a circular saw to rip apart the garage doors. Russell said the basement was engulfed.
Thirty firefighters from the Bristol Virginia Fire Department, Goodson Kinderhook and Green Spring volunteer fire departments pumped 700 gallons of water a minute onto the fire as tanker trucks rushed water from the closest hydrant almost a mile away on Lee Highway.
At one point firefighters had put out some of the fire but as they fought the way deeper into the house, it reignited, trapping them between two walls of fire.
