KINGSPORT — A Gray woman was arrested Wednesday after allegedly trying to pass a fake $20 bill in Kingsport.
Police said the color, as well as “the size and texture of the note” was not consistent with the real thing.
According to an incident report from the Kingsport Police Department, an officer responded to the Sunoco at 4101 Fort Henry Drive about 1 a.m. The clerk advised a woman had requested change for a $20 bill.
Along with the obvious anomalies of size, texture and color, a mark from a counterfeit pen proved the clerk’s suspicions that the bill was fake.
When police arrived, the woman was still outside the Sunoco at a pay phone.
Police said the suspect, Katie Ryan Cross, 30, of 137 Angeline Drive, Gray, admitted to trying to get change for the bill. But she claimed she “did not know it was fake” and that a female unknown to her gave her the bill for change in Lynn Garden.
Cross was arrested and charged with criminal simulation.
Cross was accompanied by Gregory L. Bell, 45, of 443 Manville Road, Gate City. Police said a check on Bell revealed he had a failure to appear warrant for his arrest out of the Robertson County (Tenn.) Sheriff’s Office.
