June 5th, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

According to the Bristol Herald Courier longtime Abingdon legal secretary and bookkeeper Anna Howell pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of money laundering and one count of mail fraud.

The report says Howell said  she had taken money from a real estate trust account managed by her employer, the law firm Jessee & Read. Howell hijacked the money by issuing stop payment orders on checks and then having the bank reissue the payment as money orders that she cashed to pay for personal expenses.

Howell is accused of  stealing more than $31,000 over 13 months. She also admitted to adding her family members to the law firm’s group insurance, generating more than $2,000 in premiums.
