Two Kingsport residents have been arrested after allegedly causing a wreck while drag racing on Stone Drive.

According to an offense report from the Kingsport Police Department, units responded to the scene of the crash, near the intersection of East Stone Drive and Waterman Road, about 2:40 p.m. Saturday.

On the shoulder of the road sat a green Chevrolet Camaro driven by Michelle Ruth Donihe, 35, of 1317 Fairview Ave. In the emergency lane was a black Chevrolet Corvette, which police do not believe was involved in the drag race, with heavy front-end damage.

Several witnesses told police that the Camaro was racing an orange Plymouth Neon while eastbound on Stone Drive. One witness said the Neon closed on her from behind at a high rate of speed. When the Neon reached her rear bumper it swerved to the middle lane to pass.

However, the Camaro driven by Donihe was traveling in the middle lane, forcing her to swerve to the inside lane. When Donihe swerved she hit the Corvette, and her Camaro spun around in the westbound lane before stopping on the shoulder, police said.

Police said the Neon left the scene of the crash without stopping. The driver, later identified as Timothy Allen Sumner, 22, of 900 Tranbarger Drive, was contacted by phone from the Justice Center. Based on the accounts of witnesses and a passenger in Donihe’s Camaro, both Donihe and Sumner were arrested.

They were each charged with four counts of felony reckless endangerment and driving without insurance. Sumner also received an additional charge of leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

There were no injuries reported in the incident.
