According to the Bristol Herald-Courier, a 23-year-old woman from Wise faces a charge of reckless driving in connection with a May 6 car crash that killed a retired Smyth County school teacher.
Investigators said the crash occurred after the driver of a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer failed to stop for a traffic light at the intersection of State Route 700 and U.S. Highway 19.
The Mountaineer crashed into the driver’s side door of a 2005 Ford Taurus driven by Margaret “Peggy” Kegley, 81, of Chilhowie, said Virginia State Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Conroy.
Kegley died in the crash.
Conroy said the driver of the Mountaineer, Melinda Miller, was taken to Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon with non-life threatening injuries. An infant in the Miller vehicle was properly restrained and not hurt, he said.
