Armed robbery results in chase across three counties, suspects arrested

May 18th, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

The Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that authorities arrested two men this morning after an armed robbery in Oak Ridge prompted a police chase that covered more than 60 miles and three counties.

The incident began at 1:10 a.m. when a man armed with a handgun passed a note to an employee of the Walgreen Drug Store on the Oak Ridge Turnpike, according to Oak Ridge Police Department Lt. Brad Jenkins. The note described the type of drugs the robber wanted.

After getting the prescription drugs, the robber jumped into a black sports utility vehicle driven by another man, Jenkins said.

Within four minutes of the heist, ORPD Officer Ray Steakley saw the suspects’ SUV on the Oak Ridge Turnpike and a chase began, Jenkins said. The pursuit entered Clinton, Union County and Claiborne County before the SUV stopped, the lieutenant said.

Jenkins was unclear as to how officers, including the Tennessee Highway Patrol, stopped the SUV. The chase ended on State Route 33 near New Tazewell, he said.
