Several people stopped to help an elderly Kingsport man injured Wednesday when his motorized wheeelchair overturned as he attempted to cross Stone Drive at the Clinchfield Street intersection.
The incident occurred about 6:30 p.m., according to Kingsport Police, who identified the victim as Clarence D. Reed of 909 Dorothy St.
A witness, identified as Lillie King, told police she'd first seen Reed going eastbound in the emergency lane. He turned quickly to the left and the chair overturned as he reached the center lane, she said.
Neither Reed nor his chair were struck by any vehicles, according to King.
When police arrived, Reed was lying on the ground in the eastbound lanes of W. Stone Drive and several bystanders were assisting him.
He was taken to Holston Valley Medical Center for treatment of cuts to his legs, arms and head, police said.
