The Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that a 40-year-old mother of five was shot and killed on Mother's Day while her youngest children watched helplessly, according to Hamblen County Sheriff Esco Jarnagin.
"It's a terrible thing on any day, but on Mother's Day it just doubles the impact," Jarnagin said.
Adelina Delasancha was killed by her children's father in what appeared to be a fit of jealous rage, the sheriff said.
She was pronounced dead at the scene of the 1:45 a.m. Sunday shooting, which took place during a coming-of-age celebration for a Hispanic youth that was being held at a business rented for the occasion at 111 Spencer Hale Road, Jarnagin said.
Delasancha has five children ranging in age from 4 years old to 23 years old, and three of them - including the youngest - were present at the party, he said.
As the celebration went into the early morning hours, the father of her children - identified as 41-year-old Carmen Vences - came to the party and started an altercation with a male partygoer, Jarnagin said.
"He was escorted out but then broke away, ran back to the mother and struck her with the butt of a pistol," Jarnagin said. "He then walked on top of her and fired into her body as she was lying on the floor.
"She was begging for her life, and the children were there."
The Morristown Citizen Tribune reports the shooter ran away after the shooting. The report says Hamblen County Chief Deputy Wayne Miz told a reporter, "we’ve been out all night trying to find him,” Mize said. “We’ve been going to all his acquaintances and other relatives in Hamblen County. He ran out the door as soon as he did what he did.”
