The Bristol Herald Courier is reporting that if a local professor-turned-brewer has his way, beer made here in Abingdon may be on tap at area restaurants as early as this summer.
The project already has traction with the Abingdon Town Council, which approved zoning ordinance changes Monday night to allow a microbrewery and distributor to operate downtown.
“People will learn to appreciate the finer side of beer,” said Chris Burcher, a biologist and the “brewmaster” for Abingdon-based Wolf Hills Brewing Company, which hopes to open up south of Exit 17 and ultimately construct a building downtown.
Cameron Bell, an investor in the business, says it will bring a quality of beer to the region that can only come with fresh ingredients and small-scale local production.
“Craft brewing is using very high-quality ingredients to make very small batches to create beer that you can’t get at a grocery store or otherwise,” said Bell.
