April 22nd, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

The Knoxville News Sentinel is reporting that a Roane County High School senior and multi-sport athlete was killed Tuesday night in a two-vehicle head-on crash on U.S. Highway 70 in Roane County.

James E. Sams III, 18, was traveling eastbound near Country Road when he crossed the centerline in his 1988 Oldsmobile and hit a 1999 Ford F350 dumpbed truck about 5:37 p.m., according to a report by Tennessee Highway Patrol Trooper Mike Beaty.

Sams was not wearing a safety belt. Beaty's report indicated Sams was not drinking or using drugs, but routine tests were requested.

The driver of the truck, Brian E. Leach, 34, was injured. Two passengers were uninjured. The truck was pulling a trailer and hauling lawnmowers.
