According to the Morristown Citizen Tribune 16 members of East High School’s football team were suspended from school after a bullying incident in February.
Principal Gary Johnson told the Citizen Tribune this week the young men were in a weight-lifting class for the football team when they took turns punching another player on the arm.
"One of the young men thought this young man was not doing his reps," Johnson said. "He told the others and they did what’s called ‘giving him his stripes,’ punching him in the arm."
Johnson said the coaches were in the next room and, when they became aware of what was happening, stopped it immediately.
After discussing the incident with Director of Schools Dr. Dale Lynch and Assistant Director Hugh Clement, Johnson suspended the boys and gave each a letter stating that if they ever engaged in such behavior again, they would never play any sport for East High ever again.
