One killed, one injured in head-on collision on Kingsport Highway

The Greeneville Sun is reporting that one person was killed and another  seriously injured just before 7 a.m. today,  head-on collision in the 9000 block of the Kingsport Highway.

Tennessee Highway Investigators have not released the names of the victims as of late morning.

A spokesman for the Greene County Sheriff’s Department told the Sun that the victim who died was a Greene County Detention Center corrections officer who was on her way to work in a Volkswagen “beetle.”

Jonathan Williams, chief of the Newmansville Volunteer Fire Department, confirmed in a telephone interview that the driver of the Volkswagen had died at the scene.

He said t it took firefighters and volunteers from the Greeneville Emergency & Rescue Squad about an hour to remove the driver from the heavily damaged Volkswagen.

The driver of the other car, a sub-compact sedan, was seriously injured and evacuated by Wings Air Rescue helicopter to the Johnson City Medical Center.
