4 family members die in Roanoke wreck

April 7th, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

According to the Roanoke Times four family members died Monday afternoon in a two-vehicle head-on collision in southwest Roanoke County.

County spokeswoman Teresa Hall said the wreck occurred just after 3 p.m. in the 5000 block of Starkey Road near its intersection with Benois Road.

A Ford Mustang driven by Nelson Gomez Amaya, 22, crossed the center line and struck a moving van head-on, according to Roanoke County police Officer Mike Christian.

Linda Bailey, who lives in the area, said she was headed south in the left lane of Starkey Road, just past Penn Forest Boulevard, when the Mustang passed her just before the wreck.

"Honestly, I didn't even know there was another car around me until I heard the sound," Bailey said. "It sounded like a race car, passing me on the right."
