Woman who led fight for Greeneville skate park booked on aggravated statutory rape charge

March 31st, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

According to a Greeneville Sun report the 37 year-old woman who lead the battle for a skate park in that community has been charged with aggravated statutory  rape.

Sherry Gail Melton, was arrested Monday by an attorney general's investigator.

Booking records at the Greene County Detention Center indicated  Melton was brought to the jail at 9:32 a.m. Monday by Teddy Collingsworth, an investigator for the Third Judicial District Attorney General's office.

The charge against Melton is classified as aggravated statutory rape because Melton is more than 10 years older than the alleged victim, Collingsworth said.

Collingsworth told the Sun a Greene County grand jury returned a presentment (essentially a secret indictment) against Melton last week in connection with incidents that allegedly took place in September, October and November of last year and involved a juvenile male victim.

Melton and her husband, Michael, also had opened an Asheville Highway skate and archery shop called Flipside in May 2008.
