According to a report in the Roaknoe Times a kayaking trip of 11 friends from Greensboro, N.C., ended tragically Sunday when one of them drowned in a turbulent Rockbridge County river.
Rescue officials said the man was in his early 50s but did not otherwise identify him.
The party was traveling about 1:30 p.m. down a river in the Devil's Kitchen area, about 10 miles east of Maury River Road in Goshen, when strong currents flipped the man's kayak, Goshen Fire Company Chief Mike Jolly said.
The man's friends told rescue crews the man had emerged twice, and that a swift current slammed him against a large rock and he did not come back up, Jolly said.
Two of the man's friends dived 7- to 10-feet deep to where the man was, tied a rope to his life vest and tried to pull him out with no success, he said.
Jolly said the people in the party were wearing vests and helmets and had been kayaking in that area regularly for about 10 years.
