Scott County deputies begin rounding up 27 drug suspects

March 27th, 2009 12:00 am by Wes Bunch

GATE CITY — The Scott County Sheriff’s Office began rounding up suspects Friday after a grand jury handed down more than 100 indictments against 27 people earlier this week on a variety of drug-related charges.

The indictments were a result of work done by the sheriff’s office, the Scott County Commonwealth Attorney’s Office and the Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force.

As of Friday afternoon, 16 people had been arrested, including two on sealed indictments whose names are not being released.

Scott County Sheriff John Puckett said the majority of the charges were related to the illegal use or transfer of prescription narcotics, as well as other crimes related to drug activity.

“I think altogether we had 160 indictments handed down Tuesday — that’s with the state police, Gate City police, Weber City police and the sheriff’s department,” Puckett said. The majority of these are for drugs. ... The drugs are the root of most of our problems here, and we’re going to do whatever we can to cut it out and make it a safer environment.”

Scott County Commonwealth’s Attorney Marcus McClung said the arrests made in these roundups usually result in strong cases when they go to court.

“It’s a never-ending battle,” McClung said. “Back in 2005 we did the first roundup, and we had 66 people rounded up. I also had over a 95 percent conviction rate with those people, and I expect the same with this too. They just do a fantastic job. When you get caught selling drugs, it’s usually a pretty good case.”

Puckett said arrests and indictments came not only from the hard work of officers and detectives with the SCSO, but with cooperation of the Virginia State Police and authorities in Gate City, Weber City and Kingsport.

“I’m proud of all of my officers. They’ve all done a good job, and also the public for calling and giving us information,” Puckett said. “I feel like it’s all teamwork. We’ve all got to work together if we’re going to make a difference.”
