Lee County officers round up 37 people indicted on drug charges

March 20th, 2009 12:00 am by Wes Bunch

JONESVILLE — The Lee County Sheriff’s Department conducted a large-scale narcotics roundup Friday in an attempt to apprehend 50 people recently indicted on a variety of drug-related offenses.

Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons said his deputies began arresting suspects early Friday morning.

Parsons said the large-scale drug busts send a message that Lee County authorities are still actively taking drugs of the street.

“These are cases that we’ve accumulated over the past seven or eight months, and we feel it has more impact doing it in a roundup fashion as opposed to one or two at a time,” Parsons said. “These folks that are dealing drugs, now that all these folks are being arrested, they don’t know who they can trust. It creates some conflicts in the drug culture, and that helps us.”

Of those indicted, 37 had been arrested as of late Friday afternoon. Those arrests were made in conjunction with the Lee County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office and the Southwest Virginia Drug Task Force.

Parsons said the indictments involved 103 drug and drug-related counts, mostly for prescription narcotics.

Of the 50 people indicted, 42 were for drug distribution, while the remainder were for gun and larceny charges related to the illegal narcotics.

Most of the arrests, which took place countywide, resulted from direct drug buys, a factor that should lead to solid court cases, Parsons said.

Parsons said the hard work and time invested by of all the officers involved in these cases led to a successful operation.

“Making solid drug cases is not easy and involves a lot of time and preparation,” Parsons said. “These officers answer their calls and perform all of their duties and are still able to find time to make these cases.”
