Fires break out across Sullivan County

March 9th, 2009 12:00 am by Staff Report

Several fires cropped up across Sullivan County on Monday afternoon.

Among them, a fire on Glen Alpine Road near Potato Hill Road burned approximately two to three acres of land.

Sullivan West Volunteer Fire Department Chief Drew Deakins said the property owner had a burn permit to do a controlled burn, but the blaze quickly got out of control.

Deakins said he was called from the fire on Glen Alpine to another one on Seaver Road.

That fire consumed what remained of an abandoned house that had partially burned about two or three years ago, according to Deakins. The cause of the fire is undetermined, Deakins said.

An earlier fire in the Bloomingdale community, off Hedge Drive, burned about a half acre of land. A homeowner said he threw a cigarette off the back porch, according to Bloomingdale Volunteer Fire Department firefighter Wes Verbel. An old outbuilding was destroyed.

In Kingsport, a small brush fire on North Holston River Drive burned another half acre of land about 5 p.m.

Kingsport Fire Department Deputy Chief Ron Nunley said the fire started near the road, and the wind pushed it up the side of a hill.

They were able to extinguish the fire before it crested the hill, Nunley said.

While the exact cause of the blaze was unknown, Nunley said there was a good possibility it was started by a cigarette someone tossed out.
